An Ohio lime manufacturing plant will have to spend an estimated $20 million on pollution controls after operating under obsolete permits for over 30 years.
The Environmental Protection Agency issued notices of violation to the Martin Marietta Magnesia Specialities LLC facility in 2010 and 2011, and again took action March 19 against the company for modifying and operating its kilns without proper permits. The company had also operated its kilns without installing the best available pollution controls that the permits require.
The earliest un-permitted change dated back to more than 30 years ago.
