Manitowoc Settles Illegal Engine Imports Case for $42.6 Million

Manitowoc Co. and two of its subsidiaries will pay a $42.6 million civil penalty to settle the US government’s allegations the entities illegally manufactured and imported hundreds of cranes powered by engines the Environmental Protection Agency didn’t certify, according to Thursday court filings.

The publicly-traded crane manufacturer settled claims it violated certification, labeling, and reporting requirements for greenhouse gas emissions from both heavy-duty truck cranes and nonroad equipment, according to a consent decree filed in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin. The defendants don’t admit liability as part of the settlement.
