An Indianapolis man convicted of drug trafficking and firearms offenses lost an appeal challenging his conviction, after the Seventh Circuit rejected claims that he was subject to an unconstitutional warrantless search.
Travis Beechler, who was on home detention, alleged that law enforcement used a compliance check as a pretense to conduct a warrantless, nonconsensual search in violation of his Fourth Amendment rights. But the US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit said that under the circumstances, his expectation of privacy was “exceptionally low,” relative to the government’s interest in ensuring compliance with the terms of his home confinement.
