Maine and Vermont are the third and fourth U.S. states to ban single-use plastic bags in an effort to limit plastic pollution in oceans and waterways.
The bags “have an overwhelming impact on Maine’s environment,” Gov. Janet Mills (D) said after signing the bill (L.D. 1532) on June 17. The bill had passed the Senate June 4 and the House May 30.
Maine’s action came as Vermont Gov. Phil Scott (R) signed S. 113. Both measures ban plastic bags starting in 2020.
Vermont also bans plastic straws and drink stirrers along with expanded polystyrene, or styrofoam. ...
