Maine lawmakers passed a bill to study the cost of greenhouse gas emissions, stopping short of calling for a climate superfund that’s at the heart of legal challenges before New York and Vermont.
The bill, LD 1870, which passed Tuesday, calls for a study because of concerns from the state attorney general’s office and others that Maine would also be sued, said sponsor State Sen. Stacy Brenner (D). Both New York and Vermont are battling lawsuits from the Trump administration and others challenging their respective superfund laws.
