Louisianans File Class Suit Over Sulphur Mines Contamination

A proposed class of more than 100 Louisiana residents sued chemical company Westlake Corp. on Thursday over groundwater contamination allegedly emanating from its facilities at the Sulphur Mines Salt Dome.

The residents told the US District Court for the Western District of Louisiana that Westlake, a unit of TTWF LP, and its subsidiaries failed to properly maintain and monitor the facilities, which recklessly caused contamination of the Chicot Aquifer—a major source of groundwater for southwestern Louisiana—and damaged the environment and surrounding property in Sulphur, La.
