Louisiana Sues Transocean Over Gulf Spill To Hold Contractor Responsible for Damages

HOUSTON—Louisiana filed a lawsuit Sept. 14 against Transocean Holdings and three affiliate companies asking a federal court to hold the drilling contractor responsible for damages from the Gulf of Mexico spill under the Oil Pollution Act and the Louisiana Oil Spill Prevention and Response Act (Louisiana v. Transocean).

Transocean has said it is liable only for oil released from the drilling rig and not for the much larger amount of oil that leaked from the wellhead on the sea floor, according to the state lawsuit.
