Land Bureau Bans Coyote-Killing Cyanide Bombs on Federal Lands

Cyanide bombs used to kill predators that prey on livestock will soon be banned on the nearly 245 million acres of federal lands managed by the Interior Department’s Bureau of Land Management, according to an update to the agency’s website posted Wednesday.

The bureau plans to ban M-44 devices that use sodium cyanide in a spring-loaded apparatus resembling a sprinkler head to poison and kill nuisance animals. Coyotes, wild dogs, and foxes are lured to the device with bait, triggering a cyanide blast that kills the animal within five minutes.
