Koppers To Pay EPA, States $1M For Oil Spill Violations (1)

Koppers Inc. will pay nearly $1 million in civil penalties to the EPA, Pennsylvania and West Virginia after federal and state agencies sued the company in federal court for failing to report leaking oil tanks at its facilities.

The states and Environmental Protection Agency claimed Koppers’ facilities could be contaminating the Monongahela, Potomac, and Ohio Rivers by having incomplete spill prevention plans and failing to meet routine inspection requirements. The company agreed to pay civil penalties and immediately meet compliance requirements for its storage tanks in a proposed consent decree released Tuesday.
