Key Carbon-Offsets Body Unveils First Batch of Approved Credits

A key carbon-offsets governance body has announced the first credits that are eligible to carry its stamp of approval, in a long-awaited decision that may bolster confidence in the market.

The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market said on Thursday that its Core Carbon Principles label can now be used on credits generated by projects that capture methane from landfill sites and remove ozone-depleting gases from discarded equipment such as air conditioners. Such projects have already issued roughly 27 million credits, equivalent to roughly 1.6% of the credits on the market.
