The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management unlawfully approved the construction of multiple wind farms off the coast of Rhode Island, environmental groups alleged in a federal lawsuit.
The South Fork Wind Project, a 13,700-acre wind farm, and the Revolution Wind Project, an almost 83,800-acre wind farm, will be built in coastal waters that are home to critical marine habitats, Green Oceans and other groups said in their suit. The waters offshore Rhode Island provide habitat to many species protected under the Endangered Species Act, like the North Atlantic right whale and loggerhead sea turtles, they said.
