Jeffrey Prieto Confirmed by Senate to Become EPA’s Top Lawyer

The Senate voted Wednesday to confirm Jeffrey Prieto as the EPA’s general counsel, putting the longtime government lawyer at the helm of the agency’s in-house law firm.

The 54-44 vote came after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) successfully moved to procedurally cut off debate on Prieto’s nomination.

As the Environmental Protection Agency’s new chief legal adviser, one of Prieto’s biggest tasks will be to defend a steady flow of new EPA air and water regulations against the inevitable legal challenges.
