Jana Partners Takes EQT Stake, Seeks to Halt Rice Deal

Sometimes-activist investor Jana Partners disclosed a 5.8 percent stake in EQT Corp. as the fund seeks to scuttle the natural gas driller’s deal to buy Rice Energy Inc. for $6.7 billion.

Jana owns about 5.8 percent of EQT including options, according to a regulatory filing July 3. The hedge fund plans to have discussions with EQT’s shareholders, board and management about voting against the Rice acquisition and breaking EQT up into separate pipeline and exploration and production businesses, according to the filing. Jana is also prepared to make nominations to EQT’s board and solicit proxies.
