Italy has adopted a protocol to improve air quality after multiple referrals to the European Court of Justice over the past year for failing to comply with EU pollution laws.
The protocol, which was signed June 4, represents a joint agreement among various Italian ministries and the country’s regional governments to target nitrogen and particulate matter emissions in the agriculture, mobility, and heating sectors.
The ministries have 90 to 180 days to draft new reductions for ammonia emissions in farming, disincentivize the use of high-emissions vehicles, support electric “micromobility” such as scooters in cities, and replace wood-burning stoves ...
