Itafos Units to Pay $9.8 Million for Phosphate Mine Cleanup Plan

Itafos Inc. units agreed to pay $9.8 million to the federal government, Idaho, and the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes to reimburse cleanup costs at a former phosphate mine.

Nu-West Industries and Nu-West Mining, two formerly independent fertilizer producers, agreed to cover the remedial work on the North Maybe mine site in Caribou County, Idaho, according to a complaint and proposed consent decree concurrently filed Tuesday in the US District Court for the District of Idaho.

The settling entities will “finance, develop, implement, operate, maintain, and monitor the effectiveness” of several remedial actions to stop contaminants like selenium, arsenic, and uranium ...
