Israel’s Supreme Court Halts Experimental Golan Oil Drilling Amid Fear About Fracking

Israel’s Supreme Court has issued a temporary restraining order against experimental oil drilling on the Golan Heights in response to local residents’ environmental concerns.

Just hours before work was to begin, the Supreme Court froze a controversial planning committee decision allowing 10 exploratory wells to be drilled on the Golan. The court reinforced the order 24 hours later, following an appeal from Afek Oil and Gas, a subsidiary of New Jersey-based Genie Energy that holds the drilling license 37 INER 1096, 7/30/14.
