Israel Adopts Law Making Makers, Importers Responsible for E-Waste Collection, Recycling

JERUSALEM—Israel’s Knesset (Parliament) July 16 unanimously adopted a law making importers and manufacturers of electronic goods responsible for the products’ end-of-life collection and recycling.

Under the Electronic Waste Recycling Act, companies starting in 2014 will be required to recycle 50 percent of the total weight of their annual sales. Those making or selling batteries will need to recycle 25 percent to 35 percent, depending on the type, weight, and ratio of sales to waste.

Electronics stores will have to accept and dispose of old devices for free when selling a customer a replacement device and must maintain battery disposal bins. ...
