Iowa Cattle Feedlot Agrees to Pay Penalty for Polluting River

A cattle feeding operation in northeast Iowa settled with the Justice Department over allegations of wastewater discharge into a Floyd River tributary without a permit.

Wynja Feedlot Inc. in Orange City, Iowa, will pay $20,000 and install runoff control structures according to a proposed consent decree and complaint concurrently filed Monday in the US District Court for the Northern District of Iowa.

The Environmental Protection Agency inspected the facility in 2021 and sampled the wastewater discharge, finding elevated levels of E. coli, ammonia, chlorides, and other pollutants in the tributary, according to the complaint.
