The US Interior Department allegedly failed to release public records about its decision to reject a petition to phase out oil and gas extraction on public lands, according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday by an environmental group.
The Center for Biological Diversity filed a rulemaking petition in 2022 asking the Interior Department to phase out oil and gas production to near zero by 2035. The secretary rejected the petition in June, prompting the center to file a Freedom of Information Act request for records related to the decision.
