Protections for an endangered bumblebee species can go into effect now that the Interior Department has rejected a delay requested by a coalition of construction, energy and agricultural interests.
The listing of the rusty patched bumblebee under the Endangered Species Act went into effect March 21. It is the first time a bee has been listed as endangered or threatened in the continental United States.
Housing developers, pesticide makers, farmers, oil and gas companies and electric utilities sought a delay to next January in the effective date of the protections.
