Interior Greenlights Vast Expansion of Montana Rosebud Coal Mine

The Trump administration announced Tuesday it’s approving a vast expansion of one of the nation’s biggest coal mines.

The Interior Department’s decision extends the operation of the Rosebud Mine in western Montana through 2039. The move will allow Westmoreland Mining, the mine’s owner, to recover an estimated 33.75 million more tons of coal.

Environmentalists have for years said the Rosebud mine is polluting nearby bodies of water. They also have pushed back against any efforts to mine more coal because of its high carbon emissions.
