Interior Gives Tribes Leading Voice at Oil, Gas Leasing Forum

Tribal officials took center stage as the Interior Department heard some of its first public feedback about the much-debated future of the federal oil and gas leasing program.

Some of the tribes’ feedback was pointed, criticizing Interior’s Bureau of Land Management for failing to fully consult with them on oil and gas plans. The comments came during a Thursday online public forum about the leasing program.

“Every single point, nothing has been meaningful,” said Mario Atencio, a board member of Navajo environmental group Diné C.A.R.E., referring to tribal consultation. “We’ve been saying this on record over and over and over. ...
