Industry-Opposed PFAS Drinking Water Rules Advance in Michigan

A set of proposed drinking water standards opposed by 3M Co. and Michigan manufacturers are advancing and could be adopted as early as April.

The Michigan Environmental Rules Review Committee on Thursday approved proposed drinking water standards for seven per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) known as GenX, PFBS, PFHxS, PfHxA, PFNA, PFOS, and PFOA.

The state’s maximum containment levels for PFOA and PFOS would be lower than the Environmental Protection Agency’s health advisory level of 70 parts per trillion for those chemicals.
