India’s Supreme Court Adds Second ‘Green Bench’ to Hear Environmental Cases

NEW DELHI—India’s Supreme Court will establish a second “green bench” to deal with the growing number of environment-related cases reaching the top court, new Chief Justice S.H. Kapadia said at his first green bench hearing July 16.

The chief justice, who took the oath of office May 12, also said there will no unnecessary delays in environmental cases.

Headed by the chief justice, the Supreme Court’s green bench has issued many judgments, orders, and directions aimed at the conservation of forests and the environment in its 15 years of existence.
