India’s Gujarat State Starts Work on Solar Power Plant Said to Be Asia’s Largest

MUMBAI—The state of Gujarat in northwestern India has started work on a 500-megawatt solar power park, being billed as Asia’s largest.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the park Dec. 30 . When complete, it will span 2,000 hectares (4,942 acres) and is expected to attract investment of over $2 billion, the state government said in a written statement.

“By harnessing solar energy to generate 500 MW power, we will be able to cut carbon emissions by a whopping 80 lakh [8 million] tons,” Modi said.
