India’s Anti-Pollution Efforts May Be Stymied by Poor Monitoring

As India’s capital Delhi braces for the most polluted season of the year, the country may be finding that you can’t manage what you don’t measure.

Researchers are casting doubt on the government’s anti-pollution efforts, arguing India is spending less than a tenth of what it should on a robust system of monitors that can capture the extent of air pollution throughout the country.

The National Clean Air Program (NCAP)—India’s flagship scheme targeting the country’s 102 most polluted cities—is considered the government’s boldest anti-pollution measure to date.
