India Tribunal Orders Water Pollution Action

India’s National Green Tribunal has ordered the Delhi Pollution Control Committee to ensure that steel production is not polluting a major tributary to the Ganges River. The order involves 17 steel pickling units in New Delhi and pollution related to the process in the Yamuna, the largest tributary of the Ganges. In another river pollution-related case, National Green Tribunal demanded Jan. 20 to know the status of some 700 leather tanneries situated on the banks of the Ganges in the central Indian city of Kanpur, as well as the status of the pollution control infrastructure available in that area.
