Illinois will become the first state in the Midwest to require all coal-fired energy plants to shut permanently if, as expected, Gov. J.B. Pritzker signs comprehensive energy legislation next week.
The House voted 83-33 late Thursday to approve the 958-page bill (S.B. 2408), and state Senate approval is anticipated on Monday. Pritzker (D) said in a statement Thursday night after the vote he would sign the measure.
