Pumped storage hydropower developers say they’re stepping up their outreach to Navajo Nation tribal leaders after US energy regulators denied preliminary permits to proposed projects this year.
Navajo Nation land has beckoned developers of pumped storage hydropower, which is often described as a giant water battery. The facilities generate power by sending water from a high elevation to a lower elevation through a turbine during peak hours and pumping water back to the higher elevation when demand is lower.
