Human Composting for ‘Green’ Burials Now Law in New York State

New Yorkers will be able to have more environmentally friendly burials, having their bodies converted into soil, under legislation signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul (D).

The measure (S.5535/A.382) allows for human composting. The effective date will be determined after New York’s Department of State writes rules for it and the Legislature adopts some technical changes.

Hochul said in her Dec. 30 signing note that she’s also directing New York’s state and health departments to “evaluate how best to ensure this process is offered to New Yorkers effectively and justly.” She said she’ll seek legislation in the upcoming session ...
