House Bill Seeks to Lift Species Protections, Halt Water-Delivery Restrictions in California

LOS ANGELES—Legislation introduced by Rep. Jim Costa (D-Calif.) seeks to lift Endangered Species Act protections for the delta smelt and salmon species in California’s Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta for the next seven years.

The bill (H.R. 1927) would prevent any effort to restrict water deliveries via the Central Valley Project and State Water Project as currently required in biological opinions to protect the endangered and threatened fish species and their habitats.
