The EPA on Tuesday ordered Honeywell, Hess, National Grid and others to start dredging the Gowanus Canal, a Superfund site in New York City.
The nearly two-mile-long Brooklyn canal was used as a major industrial transportation route and a dumping ground for paper mills, tanneries, and chemical plants for decades. The Environmental Protection Agency ordered the companies to start cleaning up part of the site, following a plan the agency finalized about seven years ago.
