HollyFrontier Agrees to $16 Million Air Pollution Settlement (1)

HollyFrontier’s Kansas crude oil refinery, one of the largest in the Midwest, reached a tentative $16 million settlement with the EPA and the state on Thursday to resolve Clean Air Act violations.

Under the terms of the settlement, HollyFrontier El Dorado Refining LLC would install $12 million worth of pollution controls to capture and limit emissions of sulfur dioxide and fine airborne particle pollution, two pollutants that are closely linked to respiratory problems.

The company, which is a subsidiary of HollyFrontier Corp., also would pay a $4 million fine equally divided between the state and the Environmental Protection Agency.
