A coalition of environmental, housing, and health organizations petitioned the Department of Housing and Urban Development on Tuesday to upgrade housing to more adequately protect residents from indoor air pollution.
The federal housing agency has a legal obligation to safeguard residents from unhealthy dwellings, especially within public housing, according to the petition signed by WE ACT for Environmental Justice, the Sierra Club, and 21 other groups.
The petition includes proposals to lay the groundwork for phasing out fossil-fuel-fired appliances and electrifying housing. It also calls for more adequate cooling and other equity measures focused mainly on public housing.
