Green Hydrogen Boom Threatens to Tax Power Grid, AES Chief Says

Emerging demand for clean hydrogen as an alternative energy source must be carefully managed to avoid taxing electricity supplies, according to the head of AES Corp.

The utility owner sees a broad range of applications for the fuel, including long-haul transportation and cleaner steel and cement, Chief Executive Officer Andres Gluski told Bloomberg TV. But it’s going to take electricity to run the systems that split the element from water. That boost in consumption, combined with rising power needs for computing, threatens to strain the grid, Gluski said.
