Green Groups Sue TVA Over Illinois Coal Mine Expansion Approval

Environmental groups on Thursday sued to stop the Trump administration from expanding coal mining in Illinois.

The complaint for declaratory and injunctive relief seeks to overturn a decision by the Tennessee Valley Authority that would let the Sugar Camp Mine in the southern part of the state mine over 20,000 acres of coal currently owned by the agency.

The groups also want the court to undo the TVA’s decision to privatize 60,000 acres of underground federal coal reserves in Franklin, Hamilton, and Jefferson counties.
