German National CO2 Transport, Heating Levy Passes Parliament

German national pricing program for pollution from heating and transport fuels passes upper house Friday with legislation to be implemented Jan. 1.

  • Initial CO2 levy of EU25 ($29.5) per ton payable on heating, transport fuel that will rise in steps to EU55-65/ton by 2026: legislation
  • Levy entails following retail price increases:
    • oil, diesel: 7.9 euro cents/ltr
    • gasoline: 7 cents/ltr
    • nat gas: 0.6 cents/kilowatt-hour
  • Consumers to gain relief on extra costs by reduction in mandatory charges in power bills that support green energy
  • NOTE: unlike EU-wide Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) for energy, industry pollution, German heating, transport pollution certificates not tradable ...
