Germany has drawn up legislation that will “massively restrict” the use of glyphosate in farming and garden centers, Agriculture Minister Julia Kloeckner said in an emailed audio statement.
“The goal is to essentially to end the use of glyphosate as quickly as possible within an EU-compliant framework. This is part of the coalition agreement,” among Germany’s political parties.
The legislation includes a ban on glyphosate use—marketed as Roundup in the U.S.—in private gardens. Only professionals will be allowed to use it and only when there are no alternatives.
