French Court Erases Convictions of Total Subsidiary in 2001 Chemical Disaster

France’s highest appeals court has thrown out criminal convictions of a Total Oil subsidiary and factory manager stemming from one of the country’s worst industrial accidents, which in 2001 killed 31 people and led to major changes in French regulation of chemical sites.

The Sept. 21, 2001, explosion of chemical-fertilizer factory AZote Fertilisant (AZF) in the southwestern city of Toulouse also injured thousands and damaged nearly 30,000 residences and businesses 25 CRR 1442, 9/24/01.
