Freedom Tower to Be First Building Powered by Indoor Fuel Cells

One World Trade Center, the tallest U.S. building, is going to install the first ever, indoor, all-electric fuel cells in the world.

Deployment in such a high-profile building could boost the nascent technology, which turns natural gas into electricity without combustion through an electrochemical process. The installation in the Lower Manhattan tower also could prove that solid oxide fuel cell arrays can be set up inside buildings, which might appeal to building owners in dense urban areas.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey—which owns and operates the tower—announced the news on Friday.
