Florida Utility Seeks Permit to Operate Nuclear Plant for 80 Years (1)

Florida Power and Light Co. is seeking federal permission to operate two reactors at Turkey Point Nuclear Generating Station for a total of 80 years, the first time any company has applied to operate a reactor for more than 60 years.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced March 22 that FPL in January submitted an application to extend the life of Turkey Point Units 2 and 3 in Homestead, Fla., for an additional 20 years, until the early 2050s.
