Florida Manatee Critical Habitat to Get Agency Update by 2024

The US Fish and Wildlife Service reached a settlement with conservation groups and will issue a long-awaited update to its critical habitat designation for the Florida manatee, according to a Wednesday filing in a Washington, D.C., federal court.

The Center for Biological Diversity, Defenders of Wildlife, and Save the Manatee Club said the agency needed to act quickly after more than 1,100 manatees died in 2021. The animals’ deaths were due to cold-related stress, starvation, and boat strikes, among other causes, the groups told the US District Court for the District of Columbia.
