First Reporting on Asbestos in US Required Under Final EPA Rule

Companies that make or import asbestos or products made with it would have to report the volume and other information to the EPA under a final regulation the agency issued Thursday.

The US has never joined the 50-plus countries that have banned the cancer-causing mineral.

The US stopped mining asbestos in 2002, but small amounts of it can be in other mined commodities and in imported products. Despite EPA rules requiring its oversight over imports of certain products made with asbestos, the US Geological Survey says “a small, but unknown, quantity of asbestos is imported annually within manufactured products.”
