Federal officials are moving forward with a controversial plan to raise Shasta Dam in Northern California so more water can be stored in the state’s largest reservoir.
The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation on Thursday released an updated environmental review about the proposed $1.4 billion dam-raising project to incorporate new water management guidelines adopted in 2019. The last review was in 2015.
The move could set up another fight between the Trump administration and California, which successfully sued in 2019 to stop the Westlands Water District from conducting state environmental reviews or taking other actions to support the federal project.
