The United States and two groups of individual plaintiffs who sought compensation over the Gold King Mine blowout have reached two out-of-court settlement agreements.
The 2015 blowout released of millions of gallons of contaminated water into the Animas and San Juan rivers. New Mexico, the Navajo Nation, and individual plaintiffs sued Sunnyside Gold Corp. and the EPA, claiming that EPA contractors triggered the release of more than 3 million gallons of wastewater and sediment from the Colorado mine while investigating the site.
