Feds Must Reevaluate Earthquake Risks for Uranium Storage Site

The National Nuclear Security Administration’s approval of upgrades and improvements at its uranium storage facility near Oak Ridge, Tenn., violated federal and other environmental laws by not adequately considering increased earthquake risks, the Eastern District of Tennessee said.

A “hard look” at the NNSA’s decisions “has revealed numerous deficiencies in the agency’s consideration of relevant new information,” including pertaining to dangers posed by seismic activity in and around the Y-12 National Security Complex, Judge Pamela L. Reeves said Sept. 24 for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee.
