FDA Says More Data Needed to Determine If Six Chemicals Safe for Use in Sunscreens

The Food and Drug Administration has determined it needs data on carcinogenicity, developmental toxicity, reproductive toxicity and other factors before it can decide whether any of six chemicals can be active ingredients in sunscreens.

The FDA released its six decisions, called initial determinations, on Jan. 7 (80 Fed. Reg. 892). The initial determinations were accompanied by proposed sunscreen orders, which described the toxicity data the agency said it needs to receive to evaluate the chemicals’ safety.
