ExxonMobil Corp. must spend millions on emission mitigation measures as part of a federal and state settlement over alleged pollution violations at an Illinois refinery.

The Justice Department, Environmental Protection Agency and state of Illinois announced today to resolve air violation claims at Exxon’s Joliet petroleum refinery through an amendment to a 2005 Clean Air Act consent decree.

The amendment, filed with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, requires the oil giant to pay more than $1.5 million in penalties to the federal government and to the state of Illinois, as well as an estimated $10 ...
