GENEVA?Scientific experts have recommended the addition of three industrial chemicals and one pesticide formulation to the Rotterdam Convention list of hazardous substances subject to prior informed consent (PIC) proceedings before shipment.
At a March 28-April 1 meeting in Rome, the convention’s Chemical Review Committee agreed to recommend putting three chemicals on the convention’s Annex III list of controlled substances subject to PIC requirements, according to a U.N. statement: perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), its salts, and precursors; pentabromodiphenyl ether (penta-BDE) commercial mixtures; and octabromodipheny ether (octa-BDE) commercial mixtures.
