Ex-SpaceX Engineer’s Startup Bets on Modular Geothermal

A geothermal startup is developing power plants that can be built in a factory assembly line and then installed in as little as two weeks to meet surging electricity demand from AI data centers.

Los Angeles-based Critical Energy says it’s using $22 million in seed funding raised since 2024 to open its first full-sized plant in 2027. Unlike traditional plants, the company’s modular design allows the equipment to be shipped in pieces on 18-wheelers. The funding was led by Susa Ventures and Upfront Ventures.
